The first 3 seconds on TikTok: the rules of writing a hook

On TikTok an ad's fate is decided in the first three seconds. The hook patterns that work, the ones that don't, and how to build your own.

The Metafy8 August 2026

Whether an ad gets watched on TikTok is decided in the first three seconds. If you can’t stop someone in those three seconds, the remaining thirty don’t matter at all.

We call this the hook. And most brands’ advertising dies right here.

Why an Instagram video doesn’t work on TikTok

On Instagram people come to see what they follow. On TikTok they arrive without knowing what they’ll see. The first is familiarity, the second is discovery.

That difference makes the hook compulsory. On Instagram you can open with a brand logo; on TikTok that logo is a reason to scroll.

Openings that don’t work

If you see these at the start of your ads, change them:

  • A logo animation. Nobody cares about your brand yet.
  • “Hi, I’m …” Introductions come later.
  • A wide shot of the product sitting on a table. There is no tension.
  • Music that fades in slowly. The three seconds are already gone.
  • “Our new collection is out.” That’s your news, not the viewer’s.

The common problem: they all start with what the brand wants to say, not with what the viewer wants to hear.

Six hook patterns that work

1. The confession

“If I’d known this six months ago I’d have made a lot of money.” Creates curiosity, and it’s personal.

2. The direct objection

“You think this product is expensive. And you’re right.” You say the sentence already in the viewer’s head, so they have to listen.

3. The comparison

“The one on the left is 300₺, the one on the right 1,200₺. Can you see the difference?” Visual tension, in the first frame.

4. The warning

“If you’re doing this, stop right now.” The oldest trick, and still one of the strongest.

5. Result first

“We got here in 30 days. Let me tell you how.” Puts the promise at the front and the reasoning after.

6. The unusual question

“How much do you think this costs?” People wait in order to answer.

A hook is not just a sentence

Alongside the words, three other things work in that first second:

  • Movement. A static first frame gets scrolled past. A hand entering the shot, the product dropping, the camera turning — any of these will do.
  • Text. Many people watch with the sound off. Put the hook on screen too — big, short, readable.
  • A face. A human face holds attention. A product alone does not.

How to build hooks for your own product

Write these three lists, then cross them:

  1. The customer’s problems — five frustrations they have before buying
  2. Their objections — “but it’s expensive”, “but it won’t work”, “but it isn’t for me”
  3. Surprising facts — things most people in your sector don’t know

Match each problem to a pattern. Five problems × six patterns = thirty hook ideas. Pull the best eight out of that.

How many to test

You don’t test with a single hook. What works in practice:

  • The same body video, 5-8 different openings
  • Each one live as its own ad
  • 3-4 days, then look at the thumb-stop rate
  • Keep anything above 30%, switch off what’s below

When you find a winning hook, produce variations of it. Usually one hook family will work for months.

The measurement

A hook has one job: to stop a person. The metric that measures it is the 3-second view rate.

  • Above 30%: the hook works
  • 20-30%: borderline
  • Below 15%: the hook is dead, and changing the body of the video is pointless

If your ad isn’t selling, look at this first. When thumb-stop is low, the problem isn’t the offer, the price or the targeting. Nobody is seeing the video.
